You need to learn the fine art of double clutching. A lot of these old girls weren't synchronized, and shifting them, especially downshifting, takes some practice. Shift to neutral, then let up on the clutch and rev the engine at the same time. Then step on the clutch again, and shift to the lower gear. (or try to!!) With enough practice, you'll eventually get the hang of it.
