Before I started jumping through those hoops I'd pull the old cable and soak it in PB Blaster. Just coil it up and lay it in a pan of penetrant. Let it soak a day. If that's not long enough soak it two days. I'd warm the penetrant too. If you can save the OEM cable you'll be ahead of the game.
Another thing that sometimes helps is to take the cable and use it like a whip and hit the garage floor with it a few times. Helps to break the rust loose and get it moving again.
