Just coil it up and lay it in a pan of penetrant. Let it soak a day. If that's not long enough soak it two days. I'd warm the penetrant too. If you can save the OEM cable you'll be ahead of the game.

When the plastic gets hot enough the knob will pull off. Use super glue to put it on the new cable.

Another thing that sometimes helps is to take the cable and use it like a whip and hit the garage floor with it a few times. Crazy glue your wire in it,may have trouble keeping your letter upright on C or T. Drill in there 1/2 inch if possible no oil. I went outside and tried my best Indiana Jones whip slaping the cable on the ground. Inwas able to slide the center wire all the way out. I cleaned it with steel wool, and straightened out all the kinks I could. The wire now slides in and out of the cable with little resistance.
