I started welding when I was 13 years old which is 71 years ago so have run a few beads. Bartamos' method is as good as I know for curved surfaces. For flat surfaces I like to lay the new on top of the old and cut through BOTH with a thin blade. This gives a very tight fit so no gaps to fill in. With that said we use 3M panel bond for all fire wall patching, roof inserts for soft top cars of the 30's, and any other non stress areas. Enough bond is used at the joint so it squishes out in both directions from a 1 to 1.5 inch lap. This gives a joint that is absolutely waterproof, strong as welding, and done in 1/10 the time.
