Does the engine sound, "normal" when cranking? Or does it sound fast and smooth? If its the latter of the two, maybe the cam gear lost some teeth and is not now turning. Pull the valve cover off and verify that the valves are working, opening and closing. If not, you have some work todo. Let us know.
