Like you, first thing I thought was timing is off.
Next thought is dirty fuel, tank etc. that might plug up fuel pump and carb.
What is the status of fuel (how old?), fuel lines (old or new), and tank (was it cleaned out, crud in it, etc.)? Do you have a fuel filter?
