Another option if you're not building a numbers-correct concours restoration would be to use Tru-Arc snap rings- - - -the round ones with a couple of holes in the end for a snap ring plier to engage. Those things will stay put three days past forever if you select the right size, and they're easy to remove when it's needed.

John, I've found that those E-clips are a lot more controllable if you use a pair of Channel-locks to squeeze them into position. Those clips have a few nicknames that aren't suitable for use on a website with a few snowflakes with sensitive feelings!
