I run Hedman Hedders with an Offy intake and Carter AFB 4-barrel on the 292 in my 64 C10:

The Hedmans are split front to rear. I back that up with Cherry Bomb glasspacks and I love the sound. It's loud, but I like loud.
Before I added the headers and intake, I had the stock cast manifolds...and one morning I woke up remembering a dream in which I'd cut the exhaust off just in front of the muffler in order to run a "straight pipe." I laughed at myself and went out and started to do it. Big shock: It'd already been done and I didn't even know it.
The stock exhaust was so restrictive that it was almost as quiet as if it had a muffler on it. I thought that it was just real low compression, but when I put the headers on and fired it up without any mufflers or tailpipes, it sounded like WW III going off under my feet. Good thing it was the 4th of July and there were a lotta firecrackers going off in the neighborhood.
The difference in sound between the stock setup and the headers was unbelievable...but I've never regretted the swap and I have no plans to make it quieter.
