What does the "something " look like? Some form of canister? An old filter possibly? The only thing I know of between the tank and the fuel pump could be an after market filter. My guess is a dirty gas tank or a clog that goes away for a while. This situation is pretty common. Recommend pulling the tank and get it cleaned out.
