Mike ,
Brazilian Red wood is a very dense heavy grained wood and will hold up for yrs of exposure with no finsh at all ...I would say if you can get enough to do your bed for FREE ! I wouldnt hesitate in using it MATTER OF FACT I WOULD JUMP ON IT !.
I would do some homework on finishing the wood though if you want to keeep it from bleaching out in the sun, a Sealer of some sort would be best as a urathane or varnish will not stay on for long , Redwoods from north america or south have a natural oil in them and finishes have a hard time adhering to especially it if exposed to the elements.
there are oils and sealers made especially for Redwoods and Cedar you can pick up at lowes / home depot etc....but they are a yearly maint. product to keep the wood conditioned not provide a glossy finish. Also S.S. fasteners will have to be used or you will get black marks around your fasteners due to the acidic value in the natural oil present.
This why Redwwods and Cedar are used as siding on houses next to the ocean because of there natural resistance to rot and water damage.
Hope this helps
Rad.
