I see you are from Texas, so, contact Texas DPS and explain what you are wanting to do. They are the ones who have to approve it thus you need to comply with what Texas wants. Some States use the #s from the metal tags on the cab door frames and some use the motor #s. I would think either one of your ideas would work, filing for a lost title and change the cab or just use good parts from the cab w/o title. Good luck with your project.
