All before is correct. But I installed a 70 chevy nova axle in my 54 3100 the problem there is the width of the spring pack, wider. I also made a lowering block out of square tubing and adjusted the axle to center the axle in the fender opening. I wish I could be more articulate about this but it has been 20 years. I may have just lucked out, I went to the junkyard and found the right length but had to change the u-joint. I had also lucked into a transmission that was a direct swap. Good Luck.
