Both the drive gear and the driven gear are in the u joint housing. The drive gear is a circular gear pressed on to the rear of the u joint. The speedometer cable inserts into the driven gear, which can be removed from the passenger side without opening the u joint housing. To find the correct gears which transmission do you have? I am assuming also, that you are referring to your 41 1/2 half ton truck.
