Don't give up on the gear just yet. I had mine repaired with teeth missing and the shaft bent. Missing metal can be carefully replaced by welding. I think my machinist Tig welded it with a hard alloy but I am not sure, followed by careful filing. It would be cheaper IF you can find one but I have been looking for another one for my '42 for a long time with no luck. You almost have to get the whole tranny and be sure it came out of a 1/2 ton.
