You up shift a manual trans to bring the engine rpms down. Slowing down, down shift a manual trans when or just before the engine starts lugging in the gear you're in. Disengage the clutch when coming to a complete stop. Lot of variables, such as turning corners at low speeds, non-synchronized first gear, etc. If you haven't learned how not to ride the clutch or brakes when driving you need an automatic trans vehicle. Very few people actually know how to drive a manual trans vehicle these days. I dislike it when stopped on a hill and the person behind you is on your rear, giving you anxious moments doing the clutch/brake/gas shuffle when taking off.
