First of course there are a couple of screws holding them on. I hammer with a flat face on the drum where it is backed up by the hub. After a while the blows produce little whiffs of rust and that is a sign that it is coming loose. Jerry's suggestion is the safest way. You are correct that it is very hard to find replacements.
