Check the battery terminal voltage at the battery posts (not the cable clamps) while you're cranking. That "new" battery sounds like it's got some problems. If the voltage drops below about 4.5 volts after a few seconds of cranking, take the battery out and have it load tested. It's entirely possible there's an internal problem that's preventing the battery from delivering the current flow it's supposed to. At least 2/3 of the "no start" and "slow crank" problems on 5 volt systems I've seen are either battery-related or are caused by dirty connections or too-small cables.
