To the best of my memory as a young boy at the time those engines were running, and from 50-something years of hearing stories about them, all that Dad used was Methanol, very high concentration Hydrogen Peroxide (30%), and a little Amyl Acetate (known as "banana oil") as a mixing agent. The exhaust fumes would clear sinuses half a block away!
