Both good ideas. I have to admit, looking at that exposed fan blade whizzing around when it was running didn't make me want to hang out anywhere near it. Never thought about the fan possibly being damaged enough to fly apart, and don't want that to happen even with the hood closed... New fan is cheap insurance.
