The air filter canisters I have can be removed by twisting and pulling straight out. They have a clip around the air pipe that holds the metal screen in place. If you remove the screen you can then remove the fiber mesh and wash it in warm water soapy water, rinse and let it dry before reinstalling it. Keep the area around it clean as fresh air needs to flow both in and out.
