All stovebolt main bearings are insert type, at least since the introduction of the 216 engine in 1936. It sounds like you got some bearing shells mixed up during the disassembly/reassembly. Better recheck your work or find someone with a set of inside and outside micrometers who can do some accurate measuring and sort out the problem.
