There should be almost no play up and down? That would be a bad bearing. I had pitted axles at the bearing. I had a 1/2 inch spacer made and moved the bearing out farther in the axle housing. The new seals were thinner than the old leather ones and it worked out fairly well. I have some photos in photobucket. None for the axle removal.
