Just to confirm, yup, I pulled the inside door trim off last night and checked it out. The skin is double-walled where the mirror goes, and the reinforcement has holes in it where the bolts need to go through.
I guess the accessories manual is referring to some other door skin.
Now, once I get my son off to day care, I'll get that mirror installed.
