I did the same on my 59 3800 which has the same doors. There is a panel in there and all you have to do is drill holes where the supporting panel is from the inside. Worked just fine and quite easy to do. And in fact, come to think of it, my passenger door came off a different truck - and probably a 55 - as the fastener holes were a bit smaller.
