I had the excat same problem on my 46' GMC 1.5 ton. I replaced one shifter fulcrum pin (Ebay) and just rotated the other. Then added weld material to the slot in the shifter. It helped but only marginally. I found a new used transmission at a swap meet as my lower countershaft bearings were making noise. The truck shifts far better and without all the grinding in between shifts. My old shifter went up the ash tray handle and beyond and the new used one stays about 2"-3" away. What I learned these transmissions actually worked very smooth and tight when new. I had assumed they were were built sloppy.mjl
