I'm not sure how many similarities you'd have with the SM465, but I got rid of a lot of shifter slop with these steps:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/sm465/index.html Also, the finger coming out of the snout in his picture had a couple o-rings on its shaft, and it was roll-pinned inside the snout. I guess the o-rings were supposed to cushion it while providing a snug fit, but they were shot.
