The 48-54 3 speed trans. are the same. The 55 up was a little stouter but they are built for open drive shaft. Like Pruss says you could use a 4 speed granny SM-420 but it will have to be from the same era because of the closed drive shaft. To use any other trans you would need to change the rear end & use an open drive shaft.
