Setting the anchor pin needs to be done when new shoes and/or drums are turned. This procedure (see The Manual) will align the surface of the shoes with the drums. If you don't do this adjustment, your brakes will still work, but you will soon need to readjust the brakes after the shoes wear to match the drums.
