The confusion here for some of you is we are using a 12 volt motor, 12 volt system and need to switch to 12 volt rated power resistors so that we can maintain the stock appearance.
The resistors are about $2 each.
If you keep your stock 6 volt motor, there are stepdown resistor solutions available from the vendors that remove this issue entirely as you mention above.
