You want the seal to be about 1/64" higher than flush. This helps squash everything down and seal correctly. You shouldn't have to cut it, nor add anything to it from 56 to 62. The exception is if you have badly pitted crank seal area like Jon had.
Its a very simple solution, just put it in, tighten it down and forget it unless you have a very unique situation.
