Something that works a lot better than emery cloth for burnishing points is a clean pencil eraser. There's just enough abrasive mixed into the rubber to remove any anti-oxidizing coating, followed by a cleanup with a solvent that doesn't leave an oily residue like 90% rubbing alcohol or lacquer thinner.
