The pics in your article are interesting. They clearly show the lack of uniformity in the plate. The difficulty that I will have is that I was not planning to remove the oil pan, so I wouldn't be able to determine the centerline from the crank. Not sure how I will handle making the measurements that you recommend since I am lacking a starting point.
And then the reality of the situation just sank in...the timing cover has to come off in order to get the carriage bolts into the new holes, unless you do the weldnut mod that you referenced in your article. Another rabbit hole.
