I prefer the "maximum vacuum at idle" technique for adjusting the carburetor (and dual/multiple carburetors) and the timing. I do not disconnect the vacuum advance, unless it is an engine/carburetor that requires that. Connect the vacuum gauge to the wiper port on the intake manifold.
Some people adjust as I describe and then "fine-tune" the timing using the "ping" method. Most likely someone will post that procedure.
