2 (3). Rough timing would be to line up the timing mark on the flywheel to the pointer on the clutch housing (checking that #1 cylinder is on compression/firing stroke and/or checking #1 cylinder valves are both closed (if you have the valve cover off)).

I've done the timing ball - verify rotor at #1 - valves closed thing. I was wondering, given the vac gauge readings I got today, if I could fudge the timing a little advanced before I start up again.
