My Mrs' 06 Toyota Rav4 has EPS, electric power steering and although she drives it a lot more than I, I really don't notice any difference between it and the std hydraulic PS of my F150.
The actual electric assist module is mounted to the steering shaft behind the dash and seems to be quite compact. It is inter-connected to the ECM and VSC (traction drive control) so I'm unsure if it would work standalone in a Stovebolt application. Course I'm unsure if it would fit behind the dash as there's some dash bracing that appears could get in the way.
But in functionality, the EPS has worked great in my Mrs' car for 8 yrs now....
And yep, I'm interested in some power assist for my 49 too. I've still got an inch or so of steering wheel clearance before a smaller steering wheel will have to be installed as the drag will definitely make steering harder
