We welded a cast iron Harley head. Used heat from a rose bud, Wire feed welder and, had no issues after we figured it had to be placed into an oven. The cooling caused uneven shrinking, that was the problem. Sand, kitty liter, oven, whatever, just keep it slow. I do like the peening idea, that, I will keep in mind.
