Please forgive me if this question has been asked/answered (or, if this question is irrelevant).
If you 1958 Step Van is on a Forward Control chassis, it would have come with an electric solenoid starter. Is that the kind of starter you intend to use? 6v and 12v solenoid starters are available from some vendors.
