No you dont need to polarize it with it running. Do you have any electrical shops in your area that test generators and voltage regulators??? Id just bring it in, have them test it and see if they are working properly before I went to much farther. It took less then 5 minutes for the place up here to tell me that nothing was wrong with both of mine...
