It looks like some of the pre-54 illustrations had covers that were not black-dark. It just might be artists' poor renditions.
Black suits me fine for the yellow/white 54 pickup that I am working on. It had a lot of black "accents".
As you posted, installing/replacing the rubber is not much of a problem.
