I'm fairly certain I'm going to get a 60's Chevy 20 gal car tank, put it in the rear under the bed and put the filler neck behind a license place flip up holder.
My issue: what sort of sending unit do I use for an under bed tank? What have others done/used to hook up something aftermarket to the stock gas gauge? | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 | You don't say what year your truck is but your gauge probably uses a 30 ohm sender. The '60s Chevy car most likely did too. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 367 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 367 | Oh wow. 47-54 3100.
So just get a 30 ohm sender? | | | | | Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 5 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 5 | I am thinking the same, under bed tank with filler through the plate. I am doing a 47 GMC short bed. What cars can I target for a tank that will work? | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 | | | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 367 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 367 | Gippeto, I've been looking at 60's Chevy 20 Gallon Tanks. They seem to be the correct dimensions.
There's also a thread of someone using a 25 gal Blazer tank which is another option. Either way, the bigger the tank, the more it weighs when full and the more it cantilevers the weight in the front of the truck. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 177 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 177 | 65-72 chevelle tank should work. i think that in 66 they went to a 0 to 90 ohm sender up to that time i think they were 0-30 ohm on chevys | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | Hot Rod John, I share your thoughts. Even some of the tanks that fill from inside the bed still hang low like its got hemmoroid problems!!! I want to get the tank out of my cab on the 37 but looks like it will have to be a custom made tank and keeping it to about 12 gal. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 177 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 177 | the tank on a 34-6 high cab fits between the rear frame rails. the filler neck comes out the right side of the bed. the same height as the rear bumper. could you turn the neck toward the back of the truck | | | | | Joined: Nov 2012 Posts: 543 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2012 Posts: 543 | I'm having a custom tank made for my 49 half ton... It will be bed fill and made from sheet aluminum. Likely end up around 17-19 gal.. I want the OEM tank out of the cab ASAP. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | If, for some unknown reason, you want the fuel tank out of the cab, there are replacement panel-body-style fuel tanks that fit nicely between the frame rails under the bed, as used in 47-48 trucks. So, it took a long time to figure out what tank to use for an under bed gas tank and finally went with a custom 26 gal stainless steel tank from Rick's tanks. The tank was measured and fitted by using a '39 they had in the shop. They sold me on not having to removed or modify the rear frame. The rear cross member didn't have to be removed or relocated. I don't know how the filler neck will effect the bed since I do not have a either one yet. Here are a few pics. Im looking for info on what tank I could use for my 46 1/2 ton, I need to get my tank out of the cab, I moved the rear crossmember to the farthest point of the frame. I added a heavy angle iron to connect the 2 rear crossmembers and support one side of the tank. The tank would have fit with the filler tube to the rear without any mods, but I wanted a side fill. Regardless of the tank used, a lot of the tanks mounted in the rear are hideous because they're out there for the world to see. The way a lot of guys mount them also makes the tank the first thing to the crash if, god forbid, you were ever rear-ended. I guess some guys just don't think about that though. Your install looks good. In any case if you guy's are looking to purchase the tank I still have it brand new never used and will make you a good deal on it. | | |
