Did you wire the alternator output..BATT, through the old harness, or in such a way that it affects the ammeter. The meter will read whatever passes through it, no calibration required.

#99959 03/18/2007 9:28 PM | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 83 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 83 | yes stuart , i blew the big bucks on a new ynz wire harness . i wanted to keep the voltage regulator for looks ( i gutted it ) . i hooked the alt. to the original ( new ) wire from the generator ( now alt. ) to voltage box. there i piggy backed ( joined ) the wire that goes into the amp gauge that connects to the ign. switch ( v.i.a. ) wire that goes to batt. terminal that is on foot starter . maybe w / new battery etc. , the alt does not have to put out any juice yet ? i don't have any lights etc. so i can't do a draw down yet . she really spins w/ the 12 v! thanks for your help . frank | | |

Maybe you're right about the new battery not needing any 'juice' yet. Without any lights or items online to pull from the battery, you won't see any discharge. It would seem to me even with a brand new battery that the ammeter should pop to + if only for a second or two. As things progress in the wiring, all will be revealed.  Stuart | | |

In other words, only one wire goes from the battery terminal on the starter to one terminal on the ammeter and the other terminal on the ammeter goes to the load. Your ammeter should show a slight discharge when you turn on the ignition, unless the points are open, and go into the charge area when the engine starts. | | |
