I have a 66 1/2 ton and want to put disc brakes on the front. What is the best way to do this?
I have also read that the front axel assy. from a mid 70's to mid 80's 1/2 ton would almost bolt (maybe drill a couple of new holes)up to the 60-66 chevy frame, that way the disc brakes and everything would be there already.
Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

I know a guy that used the 73-87 front end as well. As you said, I think it was mostly bolt-in, and works very well for him.

Replacing the cross member and associated parts is more work but then EVERYTHING is one year model. You can do it a bit at a time from junk yard donors, but this isn't my favorite approach. Either swap the cross member or Everything off one truck. either way, you'll have to replace worn parts. This is a great time to go to power brakes and power steering, too. If you can find a pair of 71-72 axles they'll give you 5 lugs all the way around.
