I have a 48 5400 2 ton coe, when I disassembled the front axle I did not find any caster shims fitted, the beam has the locating holes for them.
The shop manual says replace if fitted?
Does this mean I dont need them ? If I do, where would I locate them? any help would be appreciated

The factory recommended around 2 degrees of caster.
The only way to know if your axle and springs give you that caster with out shims is to measure it.
Caster is the amount that the top of the kingpin is tipped back beyond vertical. It is necessary to keep the truck from wandering and to make the steering self centering.
FYI that number is for bias ply tires, most people find 4 degrees is necessary with radial tires.

Im guessing that the shims would'nt be available to buy?

Also, they don't wear out. You should be able to find used ones easily. | | |
