It may work, but it probably wont last very long.
Even though it's not going to be "show quality", it doesnt mean you dont have to do it correctly.

You're not bound by any rules...
You may decide to do something else later on and find the pooch is "Hapai" (Hawaiian) but it will stick.
As long as you only spend a weekend or so on the paint job you won't care if something 'fails'... If you decide you only want to do it once but 'close to right' then you might rethink your approach.
You can get cheap urethane and be far and away ahead of the oil base.
