so i am wondering, because i cant find info here, if there are any rules about mixing types of paint. i.e. acrylic primer and oil based paint. Its not going to be a show quality paint job.

Id stay away from the oil base.
It may work, but it probably wont last very long.
Even though it's not going to be "show quality", it doesnt mean you dont have to do it correctly.

JeffL are you saying that mixing them wont work or that oil based is not good. I just know that oil based is farm paint and supposed to be super durable. and i can get it for cheap.

If the primer is cured go ahead and paint it. You're not bound by any rules...
You may decide to do something else later on and find the pooch is "Hapai" (Hawaiian) but it will stick.

As long as you only spend a weekend or so on the paint job you won't care if something 'fails'... If you decide you only want to do it once but 'close to right' then you might rethink your approach.

You can get cheap urethane and be far and away ahead of the oil base.

Then your good to go... just use some acetone as reducer and add about an oz of hardener (BC/CC will do) per RTS and have at it.
