| | THANKS!
For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 64 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 64 | I am pulling my 230 engine with the muncie truck 3 speed out of my 63 c10,and putting a 283 in it . I want to put a saginaw 4 speed back in it.What would be the best 1st gear ratio if I am running the 373 gear in the rear? One day I would like to go with a 5 speed but a 4 speed fits my budget for now. Thanks for your help. Longhorn | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 1,424 ODSS President | | ODSS President Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 1,424 | Start here.... then go here. For me, it's all about terrain, I live in the Piedmont region of central Virginia, rolling hills with a mountain pass at 2100ft, lot's of overdrive type long distance driving. Think about how you will use your truck and decide on your ratios and tire size, play with that second site, get in tune with the sweet spot of your drivetrain. Good luck, Cosmo

I'm going to add a bit of my own advice, too. Unless you have a big garage and plenty of floor space, take small bites. That is, do the engine first, then the transmission. As you read here and possibly other places, you may get more ideas. Transmissions can be a fairly easy swap anyway. Take your time! Think! If you get done to fast, you'll just have to get another one!
Best wishes,

Thanks for the great advice. Longhorn | | |
