OK, one of a few very last things to get for my build is a gas tank. I'm fairly certain I'm going to get a 60's Chevy 20 gal car tank, put it in the rear under the bed and put the filler neck behind a license place flip up holder.

My issue: what sort of sending unit do I use for an under bed tank? What have others done/used to hook up something aftermarket to the stock gas gauge?

You don't say what year your truck is but your gauge probably uses a 30 ohm sender. The '60s Chevy car most likely did too.

Oh wow. 47-54 3100.

So just get a 30 ohm sender?

I am thinking the same, under bed tank with filler through the plate. I am doing a 47 GMC short bed. What cars can I target for a tank that will work?

Gippeto, I've been looking at 60's Chevy 20 Gallon Tanks. They seem to be the correct dimensions.

There's also a thread of someone using a 25 gal Blazer tank which is another option. Either way, the bigger the tank, the more it weighs when full and the more it cantilevers the weight in the front of the truck.

65-72 chevelle tank should work. i think that in 66 they went to a 0 to 90 ohm sender up to that time i think they were 0-30 ohm on chevys

I have yet to see a "rear fill" rear frame mounted fuel tank that doesn't hang down like a ruptured duck. If ya think about it, the license plate is low, and if the filler neck is there the entire tank will need to hang below that point for it to fill correctly.

Here's an example:

I installed a Chevy 49-52 passenger car tank in my '65 C10. It was one of the first things I did to my truck back in January of 2009:

Hot Rod John, I share your thoughts. Even some of the tanks that fill from inside the bed still hang low like its got hemmoroid problems!!! I want to get the tank out of my cab on the 37 but looks like it will have to be a custom made tank and keeping it to about 12 gal.

the tank on a 34-6 high cab fits between the rear frame rails. the filler neck comes out the right side of the bed. the same height as the rear bumper. could you turn the neck toward the back of the truck

I'm having a custom tank made for my 49 half ton... It will be bed fill and made from sheet aluminum. Likely end up around 17-19 gal.. I want the OEM tank out of the cab ASAP.

If, for some unknown reason, you want the fuel tank out of the cab, there are replacement panel-body-style fuel tanks that fit nicely between the frame rails under the bed, as used in 47-48 trucks.

Hello All,
I'm not saying what will work for the '47-'54 truck frame but just saying what worked for my '39.
So, it took a long time to figure out what tank to use for an under bed gas tank and finally went with a custom 26 gal stainless steel tank from Rick's tanks. The tank was measured and fitted by using a '39 they had in the shop. They sold me on not having to removed or modify the rear frame. The rear cross member didn't have to be removed or relocated. I don't know how the filler neck will effect the bed since I do not have a either one yet.

Here are a few pics.

I moved the rear crossmember to the farthest point of the frame. I added a heavy angle iron to connect the 2 rear crossmembers and support one side of the tank.
The tank would have fit with the filler tube to the rear without any mods, but I wanted a side fill.

I agree that most of the rear-fill tanks don't look right. Regardless of the tank used, a lot of the tanks mounted in the rear are hideous because they're out there for the world to see. The way a lot of guys mount them also makes the tank the first thing to the crash if, god forbid, you were ever rear-ended. I guess some guys just don't think about that though.

Your install looks good. Nice truck!

I actually purchased a under bed tank from chevy parts of america ?? or one of those outfits can't remember (i'm at work) but yes the tank will hang low but you can adjust where it hangs (how low) by making spacers and or adjusting the bottom of the bed. In any case if you guy's are looking to purchase the tank I still have it brand new never used and will make you a good deal on it.
