Don't know if this helps or not?

I think thought they changed in 54 or maybe it was 55.

A couple of years ago I found an un-restored, original paint and upholstery '49 GMC 1/2 ton for sale on eBay with only 2700 original miles on it. It was in such good condition I wanted to take some photos of it to help me with the restoration of my '52 GMC. As you probably know, arm rests were sold as accessories and there is no way to tell for certain that the arm rest is original to the truck, but judging from everything else it is likely. The owner eventually sold the truck for $32K. drivers side door

Unfortunately I didn't pay that much attention to the base to see if it was metal or plastic and I can't tell from the picture what the material was. The vinyl fabric appears to have a more pronounced pattern on the reproduction but the stitching looks very much like the one on the '49.

Brad, I don't believe those arm rests are from the '47-'54 trucks. They look like they're from a car.

The part number from the Master Parts Catalog, 1929-1949, is 986154.

I think you are correct, Tom. I think the car had the shiny metal band in the arm-rest and the truck did not?

It was to show manner of construction metal vs. plastic should have added that.

Brad,

Would the car arm-rest bolt up to the truck door?

Thanks,

A quote from Greg's link to the Classic Parts blog answers that
Tim: "The Chevy standard car arm rests pictured earlier don't
adapt to the trucks very well as the mounting screws are set at
a 45 degree angle which makes it hard to mount them flush to
the door without having a screw protruding on the inside of the
door which prevents the windows from being rolled up or down."
