They're large and would normally go on a Cadillac - that's not the whole story, wait till I tell you there's another pair of Thrush turbos being plumbed in further up the line, I figure it's about here some folk will turn and run. Well that's fine. So my question is relatively straight forward - for those still reading : which end is which? This particular Quietflow (21108) has single off set ends and no indication marks regards flow direction other than 'OUTLET' stamped on case roughly dead center, no arrows no nothing. Walker tell me it's reversible. I don't buy it. I don't buy it because when you look down the ends they're both configured differently. All the other reversible s I've ever seen are always identical. At one end of this Walker the perforated tube runs almost the length bar a few iches, but only about half way at the other end. there's also a drain hole at the end where it runs in longer. If anyone gets as much as near to solving this one I'll eat my hat. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,802 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,802 | Simple- - - -the drain hole goes to the rear, and the muffler is intended to be installed very slightly rear-low to allow condensation to drain. Otherwise the muffler rusts out quickly on cars that don't get run long enough to heat up and evaporate the condensation that accumulates on a short trip. Yes, it will muffle effectively with the exhaust flowing either way, and there won't be any difference in back pressure.
Salt or pepper with that hat? How about some hot sauce? Jerry

Salt or pepper with that hat? How about some hot sauce? Jerry assuming that that are a caddi specific muffler, then that may not always be true, ALOT of caddis have the mufflers mounted swept up in the back, thus the drain hole is in the front below the inlet.

I can explain it to you, I can't understand it for you.

Secondly, the drain whole thing is a curious one since a close study of google images seems to suggest no game plan whatsoever regards being either at the inlet end or the outlet end. I am gonna go with Hotrod Lincoln on this one. Since the system is clamped instead of welded I can always change it. Thirdly, why four mufflers? Hold on, it was nearly six. My Son has a speed shop and while talking on the phone I mentioned throwing in an extra two glasspacks at the rear. There was a "you ain't my real daddy!" kinda silence. It's a long bed, I've got so much space under there to play with I explained. Why tubing he sneered just put a chain of mufflers in. He's young and all most everyone around him see loud as being directly proportional to cool. I, on the other hand, am really only trying to get down the road whisper quiet and since him and his crew didn't know which way round my quietflows were supposed to go then I'll take a lecture else where. In private he's since confessed an interest in my quest, said it could actually be pretty neat, said no one else has done it before, said he had me on 'speaker', the whole world plus some were in the shop, what was he meant to do? Has managed - for now least ways - to talk me out the glasspacks | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,802 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,802 | Having more than one muffler in a system isn't a new idea. Back in the 1950's it was not uncommon for some of the luxury barges like Cadillac, Continental, and Chrysler Imperial to have a small set of "resonators" near the outlet to handle any sound that got through the main muffler. Of course, the folks who bought those cars wanted total quiet. It's your ride- - - -do whatever makes you smile! Jerry

There is after all the issues over back pressure, mileage and power loss, we'll see. Thing is, I always had it in mind to try and make it sound more like a sweet six. It's a worked over 355, TKO, Posi and looks like Mater's brother from the farm.

I don't think glasspacks will do much to give you the sound you're after, either. Most companies have large mufflers meant to give you a very quiet exhaust note. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,802 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,802 | I have used a muffler intended for a mid-1970's Cadillac on several projects. It's got 2 1/2" diameter pipes at both ends, and one muffler is rated to carry the volume of a 500 cubic inch engine. A set of duals using those mufflers has virtually zero back pressure, and they're VERY quiet! Jerry

They'er Walker 21109s not 21108s as first stated; and listed as replacements for 93 Fleetwood Brougham. Figure to straighten record, case bunch a folk queuing up to copy. Sure they are. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 1,775 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 1,775 | I had an early 90's Ford Tempo that had dual mufflers. behind the Cat it appeared to be a factroy installed Glass Pack and right under the rear bumper was the actual muffler.
My '04 Trailblazer has dual mufflers also. In front of the axle is the muffler and under the bumper is the resonator. It's quiet as can be. | | |
