'48 Loadmaster 1.5ton 6v, rebuilt motor, generator, distributer, and new wiring harness. Since installing the above items I have let it idle for awhile, and only made short 2-3 mile drives as I am still working on odds and ends. Today I noticed that at idle the ammeter is at center or barely pos or neg, depending if lights or heater blower are activated. However once I rev over 750-800rpm the ammeter pegs almost all the way to negative. Only returning when the idle drops back down below 750 or so. This occurs with the truck sitting in neutral and when driving.
Could this be a voltage regulator adjustment?

It could be the wires to the gauge are crossed.

One way to check if the AMP meter is hooked up the the wrong way is to turn on the ignition, do not start the engine, and turn on the head lights, if the amp meter swings to charge it is hooked up backwards. If so switch the wires on the amp meter.

Check the terminal voltage at the battery when the ammeter is showing a discharge. If it's 7 volts or above, swap the wires on the ammeter.

Thank You everyone for your help, it did not even cross my mind that I might have the wires backwards at the ammeter! I changed the connection last night after trying hippy's suggestion.
One more bug worked out!
